The Building Construction Innovation Group (BCI Group) is a research centre within the School of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape at the University of Calgary. BCI Group is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of professionals dedicated to advancing knowledge in the field of building construction materials and processes, building structures, and sustainability through rigorous research and scholarly inquiry.

Employing a collaborative approach, BCI Group draws on expertise from architecture, engineering, material science, and environmental studies to address complex challenges in the built environment. Its research explores technical innovations and examines their broader implications on architectural practice, societal well-being, and environmental sustainability. Through empirical investigation and theoretical analysis, BCI group contributes to the academic discourse surrounding building construction and its impact on contemporary architectural practice and urban development.

Serving as a platform for fostering interdisciplinary dialog, nurturing emerging scholars, and disseminating findings to academic and professional communities, BCI Group strives to enrich architectural education, inform professional practice, and contribute to the sustainable development of the built environment.

Fauzan Mirza awarded the ARCC | King Student Medal for Excellence in Architectural + Environmental Design Research. Named in honor of the late Jonathan King, co-founder of the Architectural Research Centers Consortium, this award is given to a student that demonstrates innovation, integrity, and scholarship in architectural research.

Professor Mauricio Soto-Rubio presented the project “The Role of Parametric Design and Community Participation in the Development of On-Reserve, Culturally Appropriate, Indigenous Housing” during the 49th Annual Conference of the Society for the Study of Architecture in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Fauzan Mirza, presented the research project “Kakatoosoyiists” or Star Lodges. Exploring the Potential of Concrete 3D Printing Technology for the Construction of Culturally Appropriate Housing on Indigenous Reserves” during the 49th Annual Conference of the Society for the Study of Architecture, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The BCI Group visited the Innovation Research and Development Division of Gardon Construction (G.I.R.D.), leaders in material innovation, process optimization, and prototyping of new and innovative solutions for the construction industry.

Cathryn John presented the paper “Bridging Cultures: Explorations, Collisions + Considerations of Indigeneity & Design” at the EAAE/ARCC 2024 Conference “Architecture into the Unknown” in Aarhus, Denmark.

Professor Mauricio Soto-Rubio has been awarded the prestigious International Research Partnership workshop Grant 2024. His project “The Future of Climate Resilient Housing in Marginalized Communities” will provide the necessary funding to collaborate with the HTWG Hochschule Konstanz.
